Botswana offers exceptionally good safari but the country has become well know for its high prices. The principle reason for the high price tag is that the majority of the countries best safari areas are cut up into private reserves. These private reserves are home to only a few lodges whose clients are the only people lucky enough to be on safari in the area.
The result is an exclusive experience with a diverse range of safari activities; walking and boating along with night drives are common place.
The rewards of paying Africa’s highest price tags are outstanding; Botswana safari is regarded by many as as good as it gets.
Below is an overview of the countries famous areas:
Botswana Safari – the Okavango Delta
The ‘Okavango’ or ‘Delta’ is Botswana’s most famous park and as the largest inland delta in the world showcases nature at its very best. Game viewing is superb throughout and the Delta’s famous makoro and boating activities are a reason to go in themselves. Overall, one of Africa’s most famous safari destinations with some superb private reserves.
Botswana Safari – the Linyanti/Kwando/Selinda Reserves
Located just North of the Okavango, these 3 reserves make up what is commonly known as the Linyanti, an area of exceptional game (especially from July to November) and a very different habitat to the Okavango. Each reserve is private and has some of the best predator (especially wild dog) populations in the country.
Botswana Safari – the Chobe National Park
The Chobe is probably Botswana’s second most famous park after the Delta. With easy access from Victoria Falls and some large hotels around the Kasane entrance, this is Botswana’s busiest area. However, leaving the numbers of tourists aside, Chobe has seriously good game (especially elephant in the dry season) and excellent big river safari.
Botswana Safari – the Makgadikgadi Pans
The Makgadikgadi are the remains of a vast super lake that used to cover the entire area. Today the ‘Pans’ are a flat layer of salt that stretches as far as the eye can see…..a truly lunar landscape! The pans host little game in the dry season but still fascinate people with their intimate sense of nothingness. However come in the wet season and the Pans can literally pump with game, especially the herds of the zebra migration.
