About Botswana - With Botswana Odyssey
Situated in the centre of Southern Africa, Bostwana is a landlocked country stretching from Namibia in the West to Zambia and Zimbabwe in the East. Roughly the size of France the country provides the extremes of African landscapes; a place where the Dry Kalahri desert meets ancient acacia woodlands and where the flood waters of the Okavango Delta fan out over the desert itself leaving behind hundreds of palm fringed islands in the only inland Delta in the world. The climate is subtropical with large fluctuations of temperature between day and night and low rainfall throughout the year. The wettest and indeed the hottest months are December and January when temperatures can reach over 40 degrees Celsius also heralding the arrival of the rainy season that continues through March and the beginning of April. Since the introduction of photographic tourism to Bostwana, areas of the country have been solely put aside for minimal, low impact safaris. Today, over 20% of the entirety of Botswana has been designated as Wildlife Management Areas where wildlife conservation is the primary form of land use. This low impact and high yield policy results in a truly authentic experience that gives people the chance to see game undisturbed in their natural, untouched environments; it is not uncommon to spend days in any of Botswana's National Parks without seeing a sole. The best time to visit the country is between May and October, when the Delta is in flood, the temperature is perfect and game viewing is at its most spectacular. Hundreds of elephants, in herds of numbers unrivalled throughout Africa come within touching distance of humans; predators rule areas in concentrations seen nowhere else. Botswana has some of the most prolific wildlife in Africa and all in areas that are untouched and unchanged for thousands of years. The diversity of safari and quality of game throughout Botswana is what makes this country so special; from spending days lazily punting a makoro around the waters of the Okavango to night drives and walking safaris in the Moremi Game Reserve or the Savuti Channel, game viewing in Botswana can be truly unbelievable.
