Itineraries in Botswana with Botswana Odyssey

This itinerary focuses on what the Okavango Delta is all about; after a couple of nights at Duma Tao in the Linyanti Concession the trip moves on to the heart of the Delta, at Xigera Camp. Xigera is the most beautiful water camp and activites here are based around appreciating being surrounded by lillie scattered floodplains. The final couple of nights are spent on the lunar landscape of the Makgadikgadi Pans in the centre of then Kalahari desert.

Days 1 to 3 On arrival in Maun guests will be met and transferred to their shared light aircraft transfer to Duma Tao in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, Northern Botswana for three nights.

Duma Tau

DumaTau is a 10-roomed luxury tented camp located in the private 125 000 hectare Linyanti Wildlife Reserve which borders onto the western boundary of Chobe National Park in northern Botswana. The source of the Savuti Channel is close to the camp and game drives along the Savuti are one of the highlights. The region has all the habitat diversity to make it a haven for wildlife. Activities are diverse and allow guests to spend time on the water (if water levels permit this), on land and occasionally on foot. Day and night game drives are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles along the Savuti Channel and the banks of Linyanti River. There are many hides in the area where guests can enjoy wildlife viewing up close and away from a vehicle. The area is famous for its elephant concentrations in the winter months and for the great general game viewing all year. All the predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog feast on the prey species in the area including impala, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, lechwe, tsessebe and other plains animals.

Days 4 to 6 This morning guests will fly to the abundant waters of the permanently flooded region of the Okavango Delta, where sunlight and rich soil combine to produce a paradise bursting with life and diversity; Xigera is a truly authentic water camp.

Xigera

Nestled in a magnificent riverine forest, Xigera Camp is a luxury tented camp situated in the Moremi Game Reserve in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Xigera has something for everyone, in an area where there are no other camps and where permanent water allows one to take part in a variety of activities. Enjoy a true Delta experience while you sit back in a mokoro (dugout canoe) and silently glide through the tranquil Okavango waterways or watch the sunset and birds gliding home to roost from a motorboat on the Xigera Lagoon. When water levels permit (usually September to May), game drives allow the opportunity to observe wildlife and the unique Delta scenery from the comfort of a Land Rover. For the more adventurous we can track animals on foot. The wooden footbridge, a feature unique to Xigera, connects Xigera to the next island and is often used by lion and leopard moving between the islands, providing guests with great viewing opportunities. Birding in the area is excellent, with Pel's Fishing Owl, Slaty Egret, Wattled Crane, African Skimmers and a host of eagles, vultures, raptors and kingfishers to be found. The area has the high-est density of the rare sitatunga antelope found anywhere in the Okavango Delta.

Days 7 to 8 This morning guests will fly to the impressive lunar landscape of the Makgadikdagi Pans for their final 2 nights at Jacks Camp.

Jacks Camp

Located deep in the Kalahari Desert on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans, the largest saltpans in the world, Jack's Camp is a classic desert safari camp. In an area specifically known for its large herds of Wildebeest, Zebra and Springbok and the accompanying predators, game drives on 'the Pans' can be remarkably rewarding for such an arid landscape. The summer rains also leave a warm shallow layer of water that entices Waterfowl and Flamingos. Activities are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles custom designed for this terrain and accompanied by knowledgeable guides. In the dry winter months, all-purpose ATV vehicles (a four wheeler motorcycle/Quad bikes) available, allowing guests to travel across the saltpans. Walks with a Bushman tracker and a visit to Chapman's Baobab - the historical baobab tree used by Livingstone, Selous and other early exporers - are activities also on offer.
